These are some of the classes we have targeted for our participants that are over 55 years young.  We encourage you to register for the classes in the Adult section or the Family section as well.  Also, we encourage you to let us know about other activities that interest you.  We will do our best to match your interests with an opportunity to participate.The Hays Recreation Commission intends for all of its programs to be accessible to everyone.  If you require a reasonable accommodation for a service or program please notify the HRC office with sufficient notice so that arrangements can be made.  For any of the trips we offer, please note that some of the destinations are not as accessible as others.  Please call Gail at the HRC office if you have questions prior to signing up for a trip.

TRIP ETIQUETTE

While Waiting for the Bus:
*Please arrive on time.  Be here 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
*Wait before the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding the bus.  

While Boarding  the Bus:
*Please be considerate of those with limitations who may require the front seats
*No pushing or shoving
*Watch your step

While On the Bus:
*Please be flexible and remember that things don’t always go as planned.  Things like, traffic, and weather (Discretion will be utilized
  by the HRC staff) could effect the trip.  We encourage you to not let these things ruin your trip!
*Do not do anything that distracts the driver
*Remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop
*Keep feet and objects out of the aisles
*Never throw objects
*Keep head and arms inside the bus
*Help keep the bus clean pick up after yourself
*Be quiet when crossing railroad tracks
*Use of tobacco or alcohol products is prohibited
*Glass containers are not allowed
*Do not bring objects that would impair /obstruct the driver’s vision/view
*Seatbelts must be worn
*Please respect the people behind you and keep your seat in the upright position
*Seat rotation will be implemented during the day’s travel if necessary

In Case of Emergency
*Remain Calm
*Listen to the Driver’s Instructions
*Exit Promptly

*Any damage or defacing of any kind to the bus that passenger will pay for the damages and will not be allowed to take any further trips with the HRC.  


NEW TRIP REFUND POLICY
Trips that require advance ticket purchase no refunds will be issued – see trip description.  Trips with not requiring advance tickets a full refund will be issued if cancelled by the Deadline date.  After the Deadline there will be a $5.00 processing fee charged, up until two days prior to the trip when no refund will be given. 

 

ON GOING ACTIVITIES - Join us for these great ongoing activities.

BRIDGE TIME
Are you over 55 and love playing Bridge?  If you are, come on out to the Recreation Center and play.  Get together with your friends and meet some new ones while you play this great card game.  This program will meet every Tuesday from 1:00 – 5:00pm.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCH
Join us on Thursday nights for a fun evening of playing pitch.  This program will meet from 7:00 - 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Dale Allenbaugh Conference Room.  This program is open to anyone age 18 and older.

PICKLE BALL
The fastest growing sport in America is especially popular for Seniors as it is played on a smaller court (the size of a badminton court). It is played with a paddle (larger than a ping pong paddle) and a whiffle ball. The balls are furnished, and there are paddles to use. Don’t be left out come and join the fun!

MONDAY NIGHT PINOCHLE
All you have to do is show up for a great night of Pinochle.  Bring your own partner or come alone and pair up with someone.  We will meet each Monday from 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Marcy Allenbaugh Conference Room.  Wal-Mart of Hays will provide the pop and Brookdale Hays will provide the popcorn.  The HRC will provide the cards and other supplies.  You supply the FUN!!!  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.  The program is free of charge although donations will be accepted each night to offset the cost of supplies and the supervisor.

TAI CHI SENIORS
Tai Chi Senior is a proactive origination in China and has been used for many years to promote health and well being.  It has been seen that Tai Chi can help to improve balance and relaxation.  Tai Chi consists of slow, fluid movements, which are done in a standing position.  This class is geared toward senior adults and beginner Tai Chi participants. This class will also bring to you standing yoga poses that will complete your over all mind and body. Please sign up but pay the day of classes.

CIDER DAYS FALL FESTIVAL
Enjoy pioneer demonstrations, food and entertainment at this year’s cider day in Topeka. Outside you will find Historical re-enactors roam throughout the event recreating authentic pioneer life, Native culture, and maybe even a gun fight.  You can also enjoy the art and craft vendors and unique food booths. Your meal and other expenses are not included in your fee.

LAZY EVENING SUPPER

SHERLOCK HOMES: FINAL
ADVENTURE
Join the fun at the Dodge City Depot Theater as we watch a performance of the: The world’s greatest detective has seemingly reached the end of his remarkable career when a case presents itself that is tempting to ignore: The King of Bohemia is about to be blackmailed by a notorious photograph. Meal is included in the price.

CHICKEN FOOT
Chicken foot also known as Chicken Dominoes, a game of the “trains” family, similar to Mexican Train.  The object of the game is to have the lowest score at the end of the last round.  For each round, the object is for the player to empty their hand of dominoes by playing them on the board.

TREASURES IN ELLSWORTH TRIP
Come with us for a full day of activities in Ellsworth.  We will start the day at Ellsworth Prison. On this trip we will view the prison yard, cells and learn what the prisoners do on a daily base.  After a 3 hour tour we will head downtown for lunch. Before we head back we will travel to Fort Harker. This day is a full day with walking involved so wear your comfortable shoes. Your lunch is NOT included.

ELECTION DAY
It’s Election Day and Adam knows his over-zealous girlfriend will never forgive him if he fails to vote.  What starts out as a quick trip to the polls ends up derailed thanks to Adam’s sex-starved sister, an eco-terrorist and a mayoral candidate willing to do anything for a vote.  This riotous dark comedy exposes the sometimes ugly truths about political and personal campaigns.  Join us for a night of entertainment at Russell’s Theater.

Do you need something quick ideas to fuel your body with healthy, homemade snacks full of fruit, veggies, grains, and nuts?  All of the recipes are 150 calorie snacks for every attack! Taste a sample and go home with some recipes and ideas to try for your next attack for a snack.

HAYS SYMPHONY FALL CLASSIC CONCERT
Join your friends for an evening of Russian masterworks with the Hays Symphony! Uzbekistan born virtuoso cellist Sunnat Ibagimov makes his HSO dbut with Tchaikovsky’s Bariations on a Rococo Theme and Pezzo Capricioso.  Graceful and virtuosic, lyrical and grandiose, the variations feature the cello’s singing character in a warm and sunny piece. The concert rounds out with Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov’s thrilling interpretation of the Arabian Nights in which Scheherazade escapes the Sultan’s sword with nightly tales of Sinbad, shipwreck, thieves, enchantment, and love  the evening promises a dazzling and colorful musical adventure.

MYSTERY TRIP
Join us on an exciting trip to...well that is the Mystery!  We could be going someplace new or a place we have been before, join us to find out!  All we can tell you is that we will leave in the morning and be back that evening. This will be an indoor/ outdoor event so come prepared dressed for the day. The cost of lunch is not included in your fee.

POKER WALK
“Do you have a Flush? Nope… but if I make another lap I might get a better card!” Join us to walk & play poker all in perfect weather year-round. Each lap around the gym you draw a card. After five laps if you have a poker hand discard your cards and enters your name into the box for the grand prize. If it’s not a winning hand, keep walking and discard a card every time you make a lap. The more walking you do, the better the chance to win.

LET’S DO LUNCH

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING
Since 1950’s the official tree lighting ceremony for the Christmas City of the High Plains takes place when Santa Claus arrives to switch on the lights and light up the wonderland.  Join us for a trip to WaKeeney for a soup supper, walk the streets for some shopping and see the lights being lit by Santa his self The cost of supper is not included in your fee. A donation for the soup supper is optional.

NOISES
Salina Community Theater presents Noises.  The opening night performance of the farce Nothing ON is just hours away, and as the cast stumbles through their final dress rehearsal, things couldn’t be going any worse.  With lines being forgotten, love triangles unraveling and sardines flying everywhere, its complete pandemonium… and we haven’t even reached intermission! Can the cast pull their act together? Enjoy an afternoon of entertainment at the theater. Meal is NOT included.

BALLOON BOP
Ready to laugh and have some fun?  The object of this game is to hit the balloon with feet or hands without it touching the ground. Placed in a circle object is to have them hit the balloon with feet or hands without it touching the ground. We will put a little twist on the game so make sure you come and have some fun.  When we finish let’s enjoy a healthy snack.

WASHINGTON TRIP
Let us travel to the north east of Kansas to visit the home of Macron Pies and the KSDS training center for trained guide dogs for the blind.  We will have lunch at a local deli and have a few more surprises.  The day will be filled with adventure around every turn.  Meal is not included in price.
